GWYNEDD, Pa. – Aquil Stewart played all 40 minutes Saturday afternoon on his way to a career-high 34-point performance to lead the Cabrini men's basketball team to a 73-69 win over Gwynedd Mercy at The Griffin Complex.
Stewart put the the Cavaliers (7-11, 2-3 AEC) out in front 1-0 to begin the game as the sophomore went 1-for-2 from the stripe after drawing a foul in the first minute of the contest. At the 16:21 mark, the tide shifted, and the Griffins took a 9-7 edge after an Aziz Parker trey. The two squads continued to go back-and-forth over the next six minutes, but Gwynedd took a five-point lead with 10:00 to play until the break. At the 6:52 mark, Stewart knotted the game at 24 apiece with a layup followed by a fast break layup from
Ryan Byars to put Cabrini ahead, 26-24. This began a 13-6 run for the Cavs to end the first half and take a 39-30 lead into the break.
In the second half, Stewart and
Donoven Mack hit back-to-back treys as Mack hit his just 17 seconds into the half with Stewart's coming less than a minute later to put the Cavs up 45-30 with 19:00 remaining. Over the next 14 minutes, Gwynedd mounted a comeback and made it a two-point Cabrini lead, 62-60, after Manny Clark knocked down two free throws with 4:56 left. A little over thirty seconds later, the Griffins took a 63-62 lead, their first since the 7:26 mark in the first half, after Johaan Vinson hit a 3-point field goal. After back-to-back misses from the Cavs, Clark knocked down a trey to put the Griffins up 66-62. Then with 3:00 left on the clock,
Isaac Brady hit a clutch 3-pointer that gave Stewart the opportunity to tie the game with a layup at the 1:24 mark after two missed Gwynedd free throws. Stewart later knocked down two more from the charity stripe before a dunk from Mack sealed the win for the Cavs.
Stewart's 34-piece led all scorers on the day as he finished the first half with 19, on 8-of-11 from the field. Overall, he went 12-for-18 and 8-for-11 from the stripe. Byars and Brady finished with double figure points each as the pair tallied 14 and 13, respectively.
Stewart's 34 points were the most scored by a Cavaliers player so far this season.
The Cabrini men's basketball team looks to make it three wins in a row on Wednesday, Jan. 25 as the Cavs return to Nerney Field House to host Neumann University. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
