RADNOR, Pa. – In what was the game of the year up to this point, the Cabrini University men's basketball team topped Neumann University 67-65 in an overtime thriller Wednesday night at Nerney Field House.
The Cavaliers (8-11, 3-3 AEC) fell behind early as the Knights took an 8-2 lead within the first four minutes of the contest. With 10:52 remaining,
Christian Lane knocked down a trey to put Cabrini out in front 12-10. The Cavs held a lead over the next nine minutes, eventually taking a 26-22 advantage after a
Ryan Byars layup. The Knights (14-5, 4-2) responded with a 6-0 run over the final two minutes of the half and knotted the game at 30 apiece headed into the break.
The Cavs opened the second half on 7-0 run, taking a 37-30 edge within the first three minutes of the half. The Knights connected on one free throw from Justin Smith and then a jumper from Kyle Thompson before Cabrini went on an 11-0 run capped off by a Byars steal and subsequent fast break layup shaking Nerney and giving the Cavs a 48-33 lead with 11:44 left to play. The Cavs continued to lead by double figures for much of the second half until the Knights finished the half on a 15-4 run and tied the game at 59-59 on a Thompson and-one, forcing overtime.
The first two and a half minutes of the overtime period saw a scoring lull until Neumann's Tony James put the Knights up by two with a jumper in the paint. The Cavs responded with a trey from
Donoven Mack followed by two made free throws from the sophomore. With under a minute left, a Thompson jumper tied the game, but
Aquil Stewart barreled his way through the Neumann defense and took it to the rack to give the Cavs a 66-65 lead and eventually winning 67-65.
Byars and Stewart led all Cabrini scorers as the duo tallied 21 points each while
Ahmadu Sarnor put up 11 and pulled down nine boards.
Thompson led all scorers on the night as the Neumann guard finished with 24 points.
The Cabrini men's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Marymount University as the Cavs begin their Atlantic East rematches. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
