Cavaliers drop overtime contest to Saints

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Cabrini University men's basketball team fell to Marymount University 90-82 in overtime Saturday afternoon on the road at the Converse Family Fieldhouse.

With 1:19 left in regulation, the Cavaliers (8-12, 3-4 AEC) faced a seven-point deficit after sophomore Ahmadu Sarnor hit a pull-up jumper in the paint to make it a 74-67 Saints lead. The Cavs continued to cut into the Marymount lead as Isaac Brady knocked down a pair of free throws followed by a Ryan Byars layup and a Sarnor free throw to make it a one-score game, 75-72, with 30 seconds left. After a steal by Sarnor, Brady knocked one in off the glass and after a Marymount missed free throw, Byars knotted the game at 76 apiece to send the game into overtime.

Sarnor knocked down a trey at the start of OT to give the Cavs a 79-76 edge, but back-to-back layups from the Saints put Marymount back out in front. Sarnor's 21st and 22nd points gave the Cavs their final lead as the Philly native's 2-pointer with 2:54 left put Cabrini ahead 81-80, but the Saints rattled off eight straight points to take an 88-81 lead and eventually came out on top 90-82, ending Cabrini's three-game win streak.

Cabrini and Marymount traded buckets in the first half as the two squads went back-and-forth with neither holding a firm grasp on a lead until the Saints (11-9, 6-1) went on a quick 10-2 run to take a 29-20 lead with 3:51 left. Sarnor and Jaden Dickerson cut into the lead by each making a late free throw, but the Saints took a 38-28 lead into the break.

The Cavs overcame a 10-point halftime deficit as Cabrini outscored Marymount 48-38 in the second half. Sarnor and Byars combined for 24 points in the second, as the pair put up 12 points each. Sarnor finished with 22 to lead all scorers on the night while Byars added 15 points. Five Cavs players finished with double digit points as Brady, Stewart, and Donoven Mack joined Sarnor and Byars in double figures.

The Cavaliers are back in action in one week's time as Cabrini hosts Marywood University on Saturday, Feb. 4 for Alumni Day. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
