Cavaliers late-game comeback falls short to the Pacers

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini University men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought battle against Marywood University Saturday afternoon as the Pacers outlasted the Cavaliers 78-76 inside Nerney Field House.

Cabrini fell behind early as Marywood hit back-to-back treys to take a 6-2 lead, but 3-pointers from Aquil Stewart and Donoven Mack made it an 8-6 Cavaliers advantage with 15:42 to go in the first. By the 10:09 mark, the Pacers took a 16-10 edge, but the Cavs battled back and went on a 15-6 run to take a 25-22 lead with 3:24 remaining. After Marywood's Jason Holman hit a trey to knot the game at 25 apiece with 2:58 left, the Cavs and Pacers traded blows the rest of the way as Cabrini took a 32-31 lead into the break as Jaden Dickerson knocked down a jumper to close out the first half.

In the second half, both teams continued to trade blows as the Pacers took a 47-41 lead after a Caleb Vigil 3-pointer, but the Cavs answered right away with a trey from Stewart to cut it to 47-44 with 14:26 left in regulation. Cabrini cut the lead to just one point, 47-46, after a Stewart layup, but over the next two minutes, the Pacers scored on four-straight possessions to take a 57-46 lead. With 4:50 left on the clock, the Cavs began to mount a comeback sparked by Ryan Byars and later capped off by a Byars layup as the senior knotted the game at 76 apiece. Cabrini's celebration was short-lived as a Marywood layup gave the Pacers a 78-76 lead, eventually winning by the same score.

Stewart led the Cabrini offense on night as the sophomore recorded his first double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 assists, one shy of his career-high. Byars and Ahmadu Sarnor each tallied 17 points while Donoven Mack put up 10.

The Pacers' Caleb Vigil led all scorers on the night as the Marywood guard finished with 18 points.

The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 8 as they host the Mighty Macs of Immaculata University in Nerney Field House. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
