MARYMOUNT, Va. – Homestanding Marymount outscored Cabrini 11-7 in the overtime period as the Saints (16-4, 6-1 Atlantic East) defeated the Cavs (9-11, 5-2 Atlantic East) 65-61 Saturday afternoon in a women's basketball thriller.
Giana Rullo scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench for Cabrini, while Abby Paolini scored 11 points. Kai Williams added nine points.
For Marymount, Symantha Shackelford scored 20 points for the Saints to lead all scorers, with Chandley Eddleton adding in 18 and Ava Achtyl scoring ten.
A very even game saw both teams score the same amount of points in at least one quarter, as Marymount outscored Cabrini 14-13 in the first quarter, with Cabrini outscoring the Saints 19-8 in the second quarter.
In the third, Marymount then outscored the Cavs 19-8, before Cabrini outscored Marymount 14-13 in the final quarter.
There were 11 ties and nine lead changes.
The overtime was set up by a wild sequence of events as with 40 seconds left, Paolini stole the ball and was fouled. After converting two foul shots to put the Cavs within one at 52-51, Marymount attempted to call timeout during a loose ball. However, the Saints were hit with a technical foul for being out of timeouts. Paolini converted one of two foul shots, which was then followed by a basket from Rullo to give the Cavs a 54-52 lead.
Terra Dzambo was fouled with .4 seconds left and made both foul shots to send the game to the extra period.
In the overtime, the two teams traded foul shots, before Marymount went up 58-56 on a layup by Eddleton with 2:19 left to take a 58-56 lead.
After Williams converted one of two foul shots to put the Cavs within one at 58-57, Eddleton made a layup with 63 seconds left to give the Saints a 60-57 lead.
Williams would respond back with a layup with 42 seconds left to get the Cavs back within one, again, at 60-59.
Marymount would convert three of four foul shots to go up 63-59, before Williams again scored on a layup to get the Cavs back within two at 63-61 with 27 seconds left.
Shackelford made two more foul shots with five seconds left for the final scoring margin.
Cabrini took care of the ball as the Cavs committed just 13 turnovers on the day.
