SALISBURY, Md. – The Cabrini University men's basketball team dropped its final non-conference contest of the year as the Cavaliers fell 80-59 to Salisbury University on the road Saturday evening.
The Cavaliers (5-9) got out to a 2-0 advantage as
Malik Bailey scored the game's first bucket less than a minute into the contest. Shortly after, the Seagulls (9-6) took an 11-5 lead just before the first media timeout at the 15:24 mark. The Gulls first half lead grew to as many as 16, 23-7, with 11:56 left to play before the break. With 5:52 remaining,
Aquil Stewart cut the Salisbury lead to 29-22 after going 1-for-2 from the charity stripe, but the Gulls rebuilt their lead and by the break Salisbury held a 42-28 edge.
In the second half, the Cavs continued to battle back despite trailing by double figures. With 6:00 left in regulation, Jaden Blakey and
Donoven Mack hit back-to-back triples on back-to-back possessions to cut the Gulls lead to 12, 66-54. This was the closest the Cavs would come as Salisbury outscored Cabrini 14-5 over the final 5:00 of the game.
For the second straight game,
Ryan Byars led all Cabrini scorers as the senior put up 13 points and six boards. Stewart finished with 11 points going 5-for-8 from the stripe.
Salisbury's Greg Bloodsworth led all scorers on the night with 22 points, going 9-for-13 from the field.
The Cabrini men's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 11 as the Cavs head to Immaculata University for an Atlantic East Conference matchup against the Mighty Macs. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
