Cavaliers Oust Knights in Conference Duel

Cabrini’s defense prevailed after Rebilas punched in the game’s lone goal.

Aston, PA - On Wednesday afternoon, Cabrini Women's Soccer battled the Knights of Neumann University. In the tightly contested matchup, the Cavaliers needed just one goal to secure the 1-0 Conference victory.

Aided by several first half subs, Cabrini concluded a back-and-forth opening period with a goal. With one minute on the clock, Alfa Orihuela fought inside Neumann's penalty box to create a Cabrini corner. Gia Rebilas received the corner kick cross, then took a left footed strike that hit off the near post. Lexi Chiarlone, who played the corner, sent Neumann's clear attempt high into the air toward Cabrini's goal box. After a few touches, Gia Rebilas volleyed a loose ball over Neumann's defense and into the left side of the net.

In the 67th minute, Rebekah Cunningham nearly extended the Cavaliers' one goal lead. Taking a free kick attempt from the right side, she lofted a ball over the Knights' wall and goalkeeper, but her try struck the middle of the crossbar and her follow was collected by their keeper.

Despite a strong second half effort with several pressures, Neumann was unable to even the score. Cabrini's back line and goalkeeper Caroline Hassall made key stops to preserve the Cavs' their sixth shutout of the season.

Remarking on the match, Coach Ken Prothero tells "No Atlantic East game is ever easy. Neumann came out of the break and really put a lot of pressure on our back line. We made adjustments and held on for a big win. Proud of how they played for 90 minutes."

Cabrini will prepare to face Marywood, the reigning Atlantic East Conference champions, at home. Their match begins at Noon this Saturday, 10/14.
