HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Trailing by one at halftime, the Cabrini University women's basketball team outscored Centenary 38-16 in the second half on its way to a 57-36 win over the Cyclones Saturday afternoon.
Cabrini (11-12, 7-3 AEC) remained one game ahead of both Immaculata and Gwynedd Mercy for second place in the Atlantic East with one week remaining in the regular season.
Miranda Liebtag had 17 points in the win, leading all scorers with Abby Paolini netting 12 and Katie Rodriguez getting nine.
Carmen Escano had 12 points for the Cyclones.
Rodriguez also grabbed 11 rebounds, swatted three shots and had three assists on the afternoon. The Cavs connected on only 28.3 percent of their shots, but, held Centenary to just two field goals in the fourth quarter and off the scoreboard for the last 3:04.
Another strong start gave Cabrini a 14-2 lead with 2:40 left in the first quarter on a three-pointer by Paolini. Leading 14-8 after one, Centenary was able to get back into the game as the Cavs scored just five points in the second ten minutes. The Cyclones took the lead at 18-17 on a layup by Kaylie Elsbree with 1:42 left until halftime.
Leading 20-19 at intermission, Centenary took its biggest lead of the game at 25-21 on a three-pointer by Elsbree with 7:31 left in the third. Back-to-back three-pointers by Liebtag and Paolini tied the scored at 27-all with 6:24 left in the third. From that point, Cabrini outscored the Cyclones 12-4 through the remainder of the quarter to take a 39-31 lead.
Cabrini heads to Neumann on Wednesday, before closing the regular season with Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday.
