Diamond Cavs rout Highlanders to open 2023 campaign

RADNOR, Pa. --The Cabrini University baseball team received timely hitting and stellar pitching Wednesday afternoon as the Cavaliers opened the 2023 slate with a 12-2 win over Cairn University at Cabrini Carroll Field. 
 
Cabrini starter Pat Toal faced five hitters in the top of the first as the junior allowed one hit and struck out two to open the Cavaliers 2023 season. Over his four innings of work, Toal allowed just three hits and no runs with one walk and eight punchouts as the offense provided seven runs of support by the fourth inning. The Cavs plated two runs in each of the first three innings as Zack Brook drove in two with a two-run double in the second while Keegan Miller doubled home one in the third. 
 
In the fourth, Cabrini brought home five runs on just one hit as plate discipline was the name of the game. Nine Cavs came to bat in the inning as Highlanders pitching walked three and beaned two. In the fifth with Cabrini up 11-0, senior Shane Chavez-Zottnick singled to left to drive in Brook for the Cavaliers 12th run of the contest. 
 
Blake Weinstein made his collegiate debut Wednesday, as the freshman came on in relief of Toal in the fifth inning. Weinstein allowed no runs and just three hits and punched out four in his three innings of work. Dustin Sutton, Jake Eagle, and Brook each finished with two hits and two RBIs on the day to lead the offense. 
 
The Diamond Cavs will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 21 as Cabrini hosts Franklin and Marshall at Cabrini Carroll Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
