Diamond Cavs fall to Diplomats in seven innings

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini University baseball team fell to the Franklin and Marshall College Diplomats 6-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Cabrini Carroll Field as the game was called after seven innings due darkness..

Righthander Dom Marotta took the ball for the Cavaliers on Tuesday and eased through the first three Diplomats hitters as the junior had a 1-2-3 inning to open the game. In the bottom half, after leading off with a walk and advancing to second on a wild pitch, Dustin Sutton was gunned out at home trying to score on a Zack Brook single.

In the second, the Diplomats (1-2) got to Marotta as F&M plated four runs to take a 4-0 lead. Then in the fifth, F&M tacked on one more with a solo homer from Spencer Berson to make it 5-0. In the home half of the fifth the Cavaliers (1-1) answered as Jake Eagle roped a two-run double down the left field line to plate Brook and Pat Toal, making a 5-3 Cabrini deficit. Both F&M and Cabrini each plated single runs in the sixth as the Diplomats Jakob Hoffman scored on sacrifice fly in the top half and Sutton homered to dead center in the bottom half, but the game was called an inning later due to a lack of daylight.

Marotta went four innings and allowed five runs on six hits with three walks and five punchouts. Freshman Blake Weinstein came on in relief and allowed just one run on three hits with two tickets punched.

Eagle finished the day 1-for-4 with two RBIs while Garrett Laraia had two singles and Dustin Sutton went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks.

The Diamond Cavs are back at it on Friday, Feb. 24 as Cabrini hosts Rosemont College at Cabrini Carroll Field. First-pitch is set for 3 p.m.
