Cavaliers come up short against Neumann, split season series with Knights

ASTON, Pa. – The Cabrini University men's basketball team battled to the end Wednesday night but ultimately fell to Neumann University 85-80 on the road at The Mirenda Center.

Wednesday night's contest began at a hare's pace as the two squads were knotted at 10 apiece by the 16:16 mark. With 11:03 to go in the half, Neumann took a 22-18 lead after a Tony James triple, but the Cavaliers responded right away with a Ahmadu Sarnor trey to make it a one-point game with 10:42 left. Three minutes later, Ryan Byars gave Cabrini a 26-24 lead on a fast break layup but by the 6:26 mark, the contest was tied 29-29. With 3:05 remaining, the Cavaliers (10-14, 5-6 AEC) took their largest lead of the game as Cabrini went on an 11-0 run to take a 40-33 lead. The Cavs large lead did not last as the Knights ended the first half on a 7-2 run, making it one-point game headed into the break.

The second half proved no different than the first as the two squads continued to go back and forth. The Cavs largest lead in the second half came at the 17:05 mark as a Jaden Dickerson layup made it a six-point Cabrini lead, 51-45. The Knights stormed back and regained the lead for much of the second half, taking an 11-point lead with 1:46 left in regulation. Despite having less than two minutes left on the clock, the Cavs did not let up as a Sarnor steal and back-to-back layups from Byars led to a 7-0 run and made it a one-score game with 42 seconds left. However, this was the closest the Cavs would come as Cabrini fell 85-80.

Byars led all Cabrini scorers on the night as the senior finished with 18 points for his eighth straight game with double figure points. Three other Cavs joined Byars in double figures as Sarnor tallied 17, Aquil Stewart with 16, and Donoven Mack finished with 15.

Neumann's Jaylen Vaughns led all scorers on the night as he tallied 27 points with 12 rebounds.

Cabrini returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 as the Cavaliers play host to Gwynedd Mercy with a Senior Day celebration to take place pregame. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
