WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Cabrini University softball team started its 2023 season – and its Spring Training trip – in fine fashion by taking a part of games on Sunday afternoon.

The Cavs (2-0) opened the day with a 4-3 win over Messiah, then scored four runs in the first inning on the way to a 8-3 win over Alma.

After giving up a run in the first, Cabrini tied the second inning a double steal as Shauna Stotler stole second and Kelsey Huling stole home.

Cabrini took a 4-1 lead after as Ariana Mirenda scored on a passed ball, followed by a RBI single from Sydney Andrews that scored Madison Gugel. Andrews would later score on a fielding error.

The Cavs would collect five hits in game one, but, were hot on the basepaths as they stole five bases.

Avery Byrnes got the win, striking out six and allowing just two walks in seven innings of work.

Cabrini 8, Alma 3
The Cavs exploded for four runs in the top of the first, paced by three-run home run from Andrews that scored Gugel and Miranda. Brynes would later score on an error.

Cabrini took a 5-2 lead in the second as Mirenda scored on a sacrifice fly from Andrews.

The lead went up to 7-3 as Brynes had a two-run single scoring Gugel and Abby Tobelmann.

Smith would single to center in the sixth, scoring Gugel for the final run of the game.

Gugel had two hits in the game, while scoring three runs.

Andrews got the win striking out four and allowed just two earned runs.

Cabrini takes on Adrian College and Houghton University on Monday in Florida.
