Cavaliers fall to York 11-8 in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Cabrini University baseball team dropped its first game of its spring training trip 11-8 to York College Monday morning.

Pitching was at a premium to open Monday's contest as neither starter allowed a run through the first two innings. Then in the top of the third, the Spartans broke through with three straight hits including an RBI-triple followed by a run-scoring single to give York a 2-0 lead headed to the home half of the third.

In the fifth, York tacked on three more to take a 5-0 edge, but then in the sixth, the Cavaliers (2-2) broke into the run column as Cabrini put together a four-run inning as Sean Glatts and Dustin Sutton each had RBIs. The seventh saw runs from both squads, but York continued to hold a one-run lead over Cabrini. In the eighth, the Spartans (2-1) erupted for four runs on three hits and took a 10-5 lead, but Cabrini responded with two runs of its own in the bottom half as Zack Brook drove home Jaden Dickerson, who led off the inning with a pinch hit double, and the Cavs cut the deficit to just three, 10-7 headed to the ninth.

In the ninth, the Spartans tacked on one more run in the top half, and despite a rally from Cabrini in the bottom half, the Cavaliers could not secure the big hit needed to complete the comeback, falling 11-8.

Cavs starter Pat Toal went five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits and punched out eight. In his first appearance of the year, Davin Conway went 1 and 2/3 innings and gave up just one run on one hit and struck out one.

Glatts and Ryan Dipper led the way at the plate as the duo finished the day with three hits each.

The Cavaliers are right back at it tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 28 as Cabrini takes on Manchester University at 10 a.m. and then Eastern at 2:30 p.m.
