Softball moves to 5-1 with wins over Bridgewater and Chatham

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Cabrini University softball team continues its hot start in Florida, as the Cavs moved to 5-1 with a pair of wins over Bridgewater and Chatham.

In the opener against Bridgewater, the Cavs scored on a RBI single from Ariana Mirenda in the bottom of the eighth for a 2-1 win.

Cabrini trailed 1-0 until the sixth innings, when Avery Byrnes singled to center scoring Mirenda. Mirenda had two hits in the game, part of seven for the Cavs.

Byrnes got the win, striking out eight and walking six in a five-hit complete game effort. She struck out two batters in the eighth, stranding the ghost runner on third.

In the nightcap against Chatham, Cabrini busted the game open with six runs in the fifth to end the game early. Sam Kilson had four RBI in the game, her second straight day with four RBI in a contest. She hit a three-run double in the top of the fifth.

Dorian Ilyes and Holly Smith each had two hits for Cabrini, part of 11 in the contest.

Daphne Santos pitched a five-hit shutout, fanning six and not walking a batter.

Cabrini has the day off Wednesday, and will play Calvin and Dubuque on Thursday.
