MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Cabrini University baseball team downed University of Mary Washington 12-6 Wednesday afternoon behind a 4-for-5 day from
Dustin Sutton.
The Cavaliers (4-3) opened the day with a three-run first inning as Sutton led off the game with a double to left and later scored on a bases loaded
Pat Toal hit-by-pitch for the first run of the game. Two batters later,
Ben Houghton singled to center to drive in
Ryan Dipper and
Garrett Laraia to put the Cavs up 3-0. In the second, Cabrini tacked on six more as Sutton sent a solo shot into orbit and doubles from Toal,
Zack Brook, and
Christian Strickland drove in five runs for the Cavs. Brook later scored on a UMW miscue and Cabrini led 9-0 after two innings.
In the bottom half of the second, the Eagles (6-4) put one on the board on an Andrew Gerhart double, but the Cavs held a 9-1 edge after two. In the sixth, Cabrini added three more runs as Brook roped a two-run double to left and later Houghton drove in Toal with a sacrifice fly. UMW added a run in the bottom half of the sixth before tacking on four in the bottom half of the ninth, but a game-ending 5-4-3 double play put an end to the Eagles rally and secured the Cavaliers win.
Cabrini starter
James Mercante went 5 and 2/3 innings as he allowed just two runs on six hits and punched out three along the way.
Allen Yager came on in relief and threw a scoreless inning and a third. Sutton homered and a doubled while Brook finished with two doubles and four RBIs. Houghton went 1-for-4 on the day and drove in three runs for the Cavaliers.
Cabrini returns to action on Thursday, March 2 as the Cavaliers take on St. Joseph's College Long Island. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
