Cavaliers fall to Haverford in home opener

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini University softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader Thursday afternoon falling 15-4 in Game 1 and 12-2 in five innings in Game 2.

In the first game of the day, the Cavaliers (7-5) fell behind 2-0 in the top of the second after a Haverford single drove home a pair. Then in the third, Haverford plated five more runs as 11 Fords stepped to the dish and extended their lead to 7-0. In the home half, Dorian Ilyes hit a lead-off homer to left, and later Emma Barbera scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Madison Gugel to cut the deficit to 7-2. Despite the Cavaliers scoring two more runs in the sixth, the Fords (10-2) plated six rubs in the seventh and retired Cabrini in order in the bottom half to take Game 1 15-4.

In Game 2, the Fords Abby Marquis gave Haverford a 3-0 lead in the first with a three-run home run, her fourth home run of the day. In the home half, the Cavs cut into the Haverford lead with a sacrifice fly from Sydney Andrews to make it a 3-1 ballgame. In the second, the Fords tacked on seven runs on four hits and took a 10-1 lead after two innings. By the fifth, Haverford held a 12-2 lead and after the Cavs went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth, the game was called after five innings.

Ariana Mirenda went 2-for-6 on the day with a home run and two runs scored.

The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday, March 18 as Cabrini hosts Marymount University to begin Atlantic East Conference play. First pitch is set for noon.
