Cavaliers fall to Saints in first AEC action

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini University softball team dropped both games of its first Atlantic East Conference doubleheader of the year to Marymount University Tuesday afternoon, as the Cavaliers dropped Game 1, 9-6 and fell in Game 2, 6-3.

The Cavaliers (7-7) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Madison Gugel singled home Ariana Mirenda, but Marymount quickly knotted the game at one apiece with an RBI-single in the top of the second. In the third, the Saints took a 2-1 lead but the Cavs took back the lead in the bottom half with a fielder's choice from Avery Byrnes to make it a 3-2 ballgame.

The two squads continued to go back-and-forth as the Saints tied the game at 3-3 with a homer in the fourth, but the Cavs took back a 4-3 lead on a Mirenda RBI-single in the home half. The big blow for Cabrini came in the fifth and seventh innings as Marymount tacked on three runs in both innings. Despite putting up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Cabrini left the tying run on the on-deck circle as the Saints took Game 1, 9-6.

In Game 2, Marymount took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run homer from Kaylynn Johnson followed by two more runs in the top of the second to give the Saints a 4-0 lead after two innings. Marymount then tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth as Saints pitching continued to hold the Cavs scoreless. Finally in the home half of the fifth, Cabrini broke through with a pair of runs on an RBI-triple from Mirenda who later scored the second run on an RBI-single from Gugel. In the seventh, the Cavs cut their deficit in half with a double off the bat of Avery Byrnes, but the score would hold and the Saints took Game 2 6-3.

Gugel had five hits on the day with two RBIs lead the Cavaliers offense.

Cabrini softball will be back in action on Thursday, March 23 as the Cavaliers host Franklin and Marshall College in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
