HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Cabrini University baseball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader to Haverford College Saturday afternoon as the Cavaliers fell 5-4 in Game 1 and 5-0 in Game 2.
In Game 1, Haverford jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the second. Then in Cabrini's half of the third, the Cavaliers answered back with runs on back-to-back doubles from
Christian Strickland and
Colton Narciso and an RBI groundout from
Garrett Laraia to plate Narciso to put the Cavs up 2-1. In the home half, the Fords responded with a run of their own and the contest was knotted at three apiece after three innings.
In the fourth, after
Ben Houghton reached base with a one-out walk, the sophomore advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Sean Glatts before advancing to third on a wild pitch and then scoring on a single from Strickland to give Cabrini the lead once again. The Cavs lead did not last long as the Fords tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth and then took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth to take Game 1, 4-3.
In Game 2, home runs were the difference in the game as Cabrini pitching allowed three long balls on the day. Two came in the bottom of the third as the Fords led off the inning with a solo shot followed by a two-run home run two batters later. Then in the fifth, after a one-out walk, another Fords two-run homer put Haverford up 5-0. Cabrini had no response as the Cavs were held to just four hits on the day.
Strickland led the Cabrini offense on the day as the senior went a combined 3-for-4 across the two games with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Cavaliers return to action on Sunday, March 19 as Cabrini hosts Widener University at Cabrini Carroll Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
