RADNOR, Pa. – Junior
Colton Narciso hit a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning Sunday afternoon to lead the Cabrini University baseball team to an 8-4 win over Widener University at Cabrini Carroll Field.
In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore
Ben Houghton reached base with a two-out single up the middle to keep the inning alive for the Cavaliers.
Sean Glatts and
Christian Strickland then followed Houghton with back-to-back walks to load the bases for Narciso. The junior shortstop stepped to the plate with his team trailing 4-3 and cranked a first-pitch fastball over the left field wall for a go-ahead grand slam to give Cabrini an 8-3 lead, sending the Cavaliers dugout into an absolute frenzy.
Before Narciso's heroics, Sunday's game was a back-and-forth contest through six innings. After being blanked in their second game of a doubleheader the day before, the Cavaliers (10-6) jumped out in front 1-0 against the Pride as
Ryan Dipper plated
Dustin Sutton with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. Then in the second, Strickland drove in
Jaden Dickerson with an RBI-single to put the Cavs ahead 2-0, but in the fourth, a two-run homer from the Pride's Ryan Baurle knotted the game at 2-2.
In the fifth, Widener broke the 2-2 tie with a sacrifice bunt to take a 3-2 lead. Then in the home half, Strickland came through once more for Cabrini as the senior singled through the left side for a second time to plate Houghton and tie the game at three apiece. In the sixth, the Pride (6-11) took back the lead on a bunt single, but the one-run lead only lasted an inning as both squads would be set down in order in the bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh, respectively, setting up Narciso's clutch seventh inning grand slam.
Andrew Smith got the start for the Cavs and went just three innings allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts. Junior
Dom Marotta came on in relief of freshman
Blake Weinstein in the seventh and went the final three innings giving up just two hits and punching out four.
The Cabrini University baseball team returns to action on Tuesday, March 21 as the Cavaliers take on Cairn University on the road. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
