LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cabrini University baseball team fell just short of a comeback win over Cairn University Tuesday afternoon as the Cavaliers dropped a 13-11 contest to the Highlanders.
The Cavaliers (10-7) fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first, but two bases loaded walks in the top of the second drove in two runs to give the Cavs a 2-1 lead. Then in the fourth, four straight hits from the Highlanders led to four runs in the inning as Cairn took a 5-2 lead after four. In the sixth, the Cavs tacked on two more on a two-run sacrifice fly from
Colton Narciso to cut it to a 5-4 deficit headed to the seventh.
With the Cavs trailing 5-4 headed to the bottom of the seventh, the Highlanders exploded for seven runs on five hits to take a 12-4 lead to the eighth. After both squads traded runs in their respective halves of the eighth, the first six Cavaliers hitters reached base in the top of the ninth. Cabrini tacked on two runs on a
Ryan Dipper RBI-single and a bases loaded hit by pitch by
Sean Glatts before
Jacob Roberts cleared the bases with a homer to left to cut the deficit to 11-13. This was the closest the Cavs would come as Cairn pitching recorded three straight outs to end the game.
Roberts finished the day 2-for-4 with a double and a grand slam with four RBIs and two runs scored. Glatts and
Ben Houghton each had muti-hit games while Narciso finished with a double and three RBIs.
The Diamond Cavs are back in action on Friday, March 24 as Cabrini heads to Neumann University for its first Atlantic East Conference action of the season. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
