IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Cabrini University softball team topped Immaculata 1-0 Monday afternoon in what was supposed to be a doubleheader, but Game 2 was postponed due to inclement weather.
It was a pitcher's duel through and through Monday afternoon as Cavaliers starter
Avery Byrnes and Mighty Macs starter Emma Mercadant battled it out pitch for pitch through five innings. Then in the fifth, Byrnes poked a one-out single and stole second to get into scoring position for
Sydney Andrews. Andrews then drove in Byrnes for the only run of the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, despite a two-out hit by pitch, Byrnes set Immaculata down without any trouble, but in the last half of the seventh, the Macs loaded the bases with one out. Byrnes proceeded to retire the next two Immaculata hitters and preserve the 1-0 shutout victory.
Byrnes picked up her fourth win of the year as she went the distance and scattered six hits with four walks and struck out six Mighty Macs hitters.
Game 2 of the doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up at a later date.
The Cavaliers return to scheduled action on Thursday, March 30 as Cabrini hosts Keystone College in a midweek non-conference doubleheader at Cabrini Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
