RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Keystone College at home Thursday afternoon as the Cavaliers took both games in five innings winning 9-0 in Game 1 and 12-1 Game 2.
In Game 1, the Cavaliers plated two runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI-fielder's choice from
Avery Byrnes followed by an RBI-single from
Kaitlyn Delaney to put Cabrini up 2-0 after the first. In the third,
Sydney Andrews tripled home two more as Byrnes and
Madison Gugel scored to make it a 4-0 Cavs lead. The big inning came in the fifth when Cabrini plated five runs on three hits.
Shauna Stotler and Gugel each knocked in a run with RBI-singles and then two wild pitches and two Keystone miscues led to three more Cavalier runs as Cabrini held a 9-0 lead after five.
In the fifth, freshman
Daphne Santos came on in relief of Byrnes and despite a lead-off double, Santos kept the shutout intact and closed out the 9-0 win. Byrnes went the first four innings with just three hits allowed as she walked two and punched out 10 for her fifth win of the year.
In Game 2, the Blue and White bats remained red hot as
Ariana Mirenda led off the bottom of the first with a double and later came around to score on an RBI-single from
Kelsey Huling. In the third, the Cavs tacked on four more to take a 5-0 lead, but in the fourth, Cabrini added seven runs to go ahead 12-0.
Holly Smith homered to lead off the home half of the inning, followed by a double from
Marisa Stracciolini who later came around to score on an RBI-single from
Marissa Urner. After an RBI-single from Huling,
Sam Taddei plated two more with a pinch-hit single followed by a two-run homer from
Emma Barbera to all but put the game on ice as the Cavs sailed to a 12-1 win.
Santos spun a gem in Game 2 as the freshman tossed a complete game as she allowed just one run on six hits and struck out seven.
Smith led the offense in Game 2, going 2-for-2 with a single and a two-run homer. All nine starters reached base at least once while eight recorded at least one hit Game 2.
The Cavaliers return to the diamond on Monday, April 3 as Cabrini hosts the Marywood University Pacers for an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
