ASTON, Pa.— The Cabrini University baseball team took Game 3 against Neumann 18-6 as the Cavaliers used an 11-run second inning to sweep the Knights in their opening Atlantic East Conference series.
After three days of postponements, the two squads were finally able to play the third game of the series as the Cavaliers came to play Wednesday afternoon. In the top of the first, junior
Ryan Dipper socked a home run to left to get the Cavs on the board right away. In the home half of the first, the Knights knotted the game at one apiece on a base on balls with the bases loaded, but in the second, 15 batters came to the plate for Cabrini and 11 of them scored as
Brady Campbell, Dipper, and
Zack Brook all had two-RBI base hits to lead the way and give Cabrini a 12-1 lead.
The Knights plated three runs in the home half of the second and then two more in the fifth on a two-run homer from Andrew Curran, but the Cavs held a 13-6 lead through five innings. Cabrini scored in three of the final four innings as the Cavs plated two runs in the sixth on a two-run single from Campbell followed by a lead-off home run in teh seventh from
Dustin Sutton, and finally a two-run homer from
Ben Houghton in the ninth for the Blue and White's 17th and 18th runs of the day helping Cabrini cruise to an 18-6 win and a sweep to begin AEC action.
Campbell went 4-for-5 on the afternoon with a double and five RBIs to lead the offense. Dipper finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
In the series, the Cavaliers scored a total of 42 runs on 44 hits, including eight home runs and 10 doubles.
Blake Weinstein got the win for the Cavs as the first-year went five and one third innings out of the bullpen, allowing just two runs on four hits with two walks and three punch outs.
The Cavaliers are back in action on Friday, March 31 as Cabrini hosts Marywood in the first game of a three-game series with the Pacers. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at Cabrini Carroll Field.
