RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini University softball team split its doubleheader with Marywood University Monday afternoon as the Cavaliers socked four home runs in Game 1 to win 10-0 before falling 9-2 in Game 2 at Cabrini Field.
Game 1 was all Cavaliers from the start. In the bottom of the first,
Ariana Mirenda scored on an RBI-single from
Abby Tobelmann, who later scored on a double from Byrnes to make it 2-0 after one inning. Two innings later in the home half of the third,
Madison Gugel sparked a two-out rally with a solo shot to left center. Byrnes and Delaney followed with back-to-back singles before
Sydney Andrews and
Kelsey Huling hit back-to-back dingers to cap off a five-run third inning. In the fourth, the Cavaliers reached double digit runs as Byrnes drove in her second of the game followed by a blast into the left center trees from
Kaitlyn Delaney for Cabrini's ninth and 10th runs of the game.
Byrnes went the distance in the contest as the senior allowed only five base runners on the day, two hits and three walks, with 10 punch outs. Monday's game was her second straight 10-strikeout as she eclipsed the 300-career strikeout mark in the effort.
Game 2 was a different story for the Cavaliers as the Pacers jumped out in front 3-0 in the top of the first on a three-run homer. The Cavs cut into the deficit with one in the third as
Kelsey Huling stole home to make it a 3-1 contest. The two squads then traded homers in the third as Emma McNally hit a solo shot in the top half before
Ariana Mirenda led off the bottom half with a dinger of her own. In the fifth, the Pacers created some separation as Marywood capitalized on two Cabrini miscues and plated three runs to take a 7-2 lead. Two innings later, the Pacers put the game of out of reach with two runs in the top of the seventh and took Game 2 to split the doubleheader.
The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday, April 5 as Cabrini heads to Aston for an Atlantic East Conference battle with the Neuman Knights. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 3 p.m.
