Cavaliers take two out of three from Marywood

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cabrini University baseball team split its doubleheader with Marywood Sunday afternoon as the Pacers took Game 1 5-0, but the Cavaliers bounced back to take Game 2 12-2.

It was all Pacers in Game 1 as Marywood starter Michael Aronica shut down a hot Cabrini lineup as he went six scoreless innings and only allowed three hits. On the other side, Cavaliers starter Pat Toal dropped to 4-3 on the year as he allowed five runs in his 4 and 1/3 innings of work with six punch outs. Hunter Kraiza saw his first game action of 2023 as the sophomore pitched the bottom of the sixth and set down the Pacers in order, ending the inning with strikeout.

The Cavaliers bounced back in Game 2 as Cabrini put up 12 runs on 12 hits. In the second, Jaden Dickerson led off the inning with a double and came around to score two batters later after a Zack Brook single and a sacrifice bunt from Sean Glatts for first run of the game. Brook later scored on a Marywood miscue to extend the Cabrini lead to 2-0 after two.

In the fourth, the Cavs plated four more runs on just two hits as Cabrini took advantage of two Pacer errors with the big blow coming from Colton Narciso as he sent a two-run double to right to give the Cavaliers a 5-0 lead. By the seventh, the Cavs held a 6-0 lead and extended it to 7-0 after Christian Strickland drew a bases loaded walk. Then in the ninth, after showing off his speed and stealing home in the seventh, Ryan Dipper roped a double down the left field line to plate two runs before later scoring on a double from Brook to make it a 12-0 Cabrini advantage.

Left hander Blake Weinstein remained undefeated on the year as the freshman went six shutout innings, scattering just five hits. Dom Marotta came out of the bullpen for the second time on the afternoon and allowed two unearned runs with two strikeouts. Brook then entered in the eighth inning and recorded the final four outs to seal the 12-2 victory.

Dickerson and Brook led the day with three hits and an RBI each while Dipper went 2-for-6 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

The Cavaliers return to action on Monday, April 3 as Cabrini heads to Camden, N.J. for a non-conference bout with Rutgers-Camden. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
