RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini University softball team split its doubleheader with Franklin and Marshall College Thursday afternoon as the Cavaliers shutout the Diplomats 4-0 in Game 1 before falling 5-0 in Game 2.
The Cavaliers (18-11) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as
Ariana Mirenda led off the home half with a single and later came around to score on an F&M miscue. Then in the third, with runners on second and third, pitcher
Avery Byrnes helped herself out as the senior doubled home a pair to extend the Cabrini advantage to 3-0. Two batters later,
Kelsey Huling plated Byrnes with an RBI-single to make it a 4-0 Cavaliers lead.
Once the Cavs went ahead 4-0 in the third, Byrnes went on cruise control as the righty did not allow another hit until a two-out double in the top of the seventh. Byrnes went the distance and allowed just the three hits and three walks as she punched out 13 for her 10th win and fifth complete game shutout of the year. In the win, she eclipsed 100 strikeouts for the season.
In Game 2, Cabrini struggled at the dish as the Cavs mustered just three hits. The Diplomats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as F&M manufactured its first run with a single, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI-double. In the sixth, the Diplomats extended their lead to 3-1 with a two-run double from Alexa Klepper followed by two more runs in the seventh to take Game 2, 5-0.
The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday, April 22 as Cabrini hosts Gwynedd Mercy for an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.
