Byrnes, Tobelmann lead Cavaliers past Gwynedd in doubleheader sweep

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini University softball team used an Avery Byrnes no-hitter and a ninth inning walk-off single from Abby Tobelmann to sweep its doubleheader against Gwynedd Mercy Saturday afternoon at Cabrini Field.

Game 1 was all Cavaliers from the get-go. Byrnes came out firing on all cylinders as the senior struck out the side in order in the top of the first. In the second, she allowed one walk, her only base runner of the day, but struck out the next Griffins batter she faced. Then in the bottom half, Sydney Andrews led off the inning with a solo jack to left to give the Cavs a 1-0 edge. In the fourth, Cabrini tacked on two more with back-to-back sacrifice flies from Kelsey Huling and Kaitlyn Delaney to take a 3-0 lead.

With the Cavs up 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Holly Smith stepped to the plate with a runner on second and corked a pitch over the left field fence for a two-run homer and Cabrini's fourth and fifth runs of the day.

The Cavs tacked on one more in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI-groundout from Dorian Ilyes, but that was plenty for Byrnes in the circle. The right-hander tossed her seventh-career no-hitter and third of 2023. She allowed just the one walk and struck out 13, her fourth start in a row of 10 or more strikeouts.

Game 2 had more fireworks. The Cavs struck first in the bottom of the first, but the Griffins answered with two runs in the top half of the third to take a 2-1 advantage. Then in the fourth, Gwynedd went ahead 4-1 as the Griffins scored twice on back-to-back Cavalier miscues. In the fifth, Tobelmann cut the deficit to 4-2 with an RBI-groundout to plate Mirenda. Then in the bottom of the seventh, the Cavs manufactured the tying runs as Emma Barbera led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a Delaney single, and scored on a sacrifice bunt to make it 4-3. Delaney later took advantage of a Griffins error and scored the tying run to send the game to extras.

In the ninth, Barbera led off the inning with a single and later stole second. Delaney and Mirenda then each worked a walk to load the bases for Tobelmann who promptly drove a single up the middle to walk it off and give the Cavs a 5-4 win.

The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday, April 25 as Cabrini heads down the road to Rosemont College for a non-conference doubleheader with the Ravens. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
