BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Cabrini University softball team split its non-conference doubleheader with Rosemont Tuesday afternoon as the Cavaliers took Game 1, 4-0, but fell 5-4 in eight innings in Game 2.
In Game 1, the Cavaliers scored four runs with two outs in the third as
Ariana Mirenda tripled and later scored on an RBI-single from
Abby Tobelmann to put the Cavs ahead 1-0. Tobelmann then stole second and came around to score on a single from
Sydney Andrews. The big blow came off the bat of
Kaitlyn Delaney as she roped a two-run double after
Avery Byrnes reached on a Ravens error to extend the Cavs lead to 4-0.
Four runs were plenty for Byrnes as the senior went seven innings for the fifth straight start. The right-hander allowed just five base runners on three hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts. Tuesday's start was Byrnes's fifth straight with 10 or more punch outs.
In Game 2, Rosemont struck first in the bottom of the second with an RBI-groundout to take a 1-0 lead. The Cavs answered back in the top half of the third as Andrews drove in a pair with a two-run double, followed by an RBI-single from
Daphne Santos, and an RBI-groundout from
Sam Taddei to give Cabrini a 4-1 advantage. The Ravens responded on their home field immediately as Rosemont plated two in the bottom half of the third to make it a one-run game after three.
In the bottom of the seventh, a Rosemont double knotted the game at four apiece to force extras. Then in the eighth, the Ravens plated the winning run to split the doubleheader.
The Cavaliers return to the diamond on Thursday, April 27 as Cabrini heads to Immaculata for a single game against the Mighty Macs. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
