IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Cabrini University softball team topped Immaculata University 9-2 Thursday afternoon as the Cavaliers swept the season series against the Mighty Macs.
Thursday's contest was all Cavaliers from the start as
Ariana Mirenda worked a walk to lead off the top of the first and later came around to score on
Sydney Andrews sacrifice fly.
Kaitlyn Delaney followed with a one-out double and later scored on a
Kelsey Huling RBI-single to give Cabrini a 2-0 edge. The Mighty Macs answered with a lone run in the bottom half, but a two-run homer from Mirenda in the top of the second gave the Cavs a 4-1 lead.
In the fourth, Mirenda doubled home
Holly Smith and
Abby Tobelmann after the duo reached base on pair of one-out singles to make it a 6-1 ballgame. Three innings later, the Cavs tacked on three more with help from a Mighty Macs passed ball and a pair of RBI-singles from
Marissa Urner and Mirenda to seal the 9-2 win for Cabrini.
Mirenda finished the day 4-for-4 with five RBIs and was a triple shy of the cycle.
In the circle, freshman
Daphne Santos tossed five innings and allowed just one run on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Avery Byrnes came on in relief of Santos in the fifth inning and went the final two innings with one run allowed on three hits and four punch outs.
The Cavaliers close out the regular season on Friday, April 28 as Cabrini heads to Hackettstown, N.J. for an Atlantic East doubleheader against the Centenary Cyclones. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
