HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Cabrini University softball team used a pair of late-inning rallies to sweep Centenary University Friday afternoon in the final regular season Atlantic East Conference doubleheader as the Cavaliers took Game 1, 8-3 followed by a 14-4 Game 2 win.
In Game 1, the Cyclones used three RBI-singles over the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead after three. In the top half of the fifth, the Cavs answered with two runs as
Abby Tobelmann worked a bases loaded walk followed by an RBI-groundout from
Sydney Andrews to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Cyclones took a one-run lead into the seventh, but the Cavs bats exploded for six runs on seven hits as
Kaitlyn Delaney drove in a pair with a two-run double followed by four straight RBI-singles from the Cavs to take an 8-3 edge.
Avery Byrnes shut the door in the bottom of the seventh as she went all seven innings with only three runs allowed on 11 hits and nine punch outs.
Five Cavaliers starters recorded a multi-hit day as
Ariana Mirenda and
Shauna Stotler each had three hits while Tobelmann, Byrnes, and
Dorian Ilyes each tallied two hits.
The Cavs scored first in Game 2 as an RBI-double from Andrews plated Mirenda and an RBI-sacrifice bunt from Byrnes scored Tobelmann to give Cabrini a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, Stotler drove in
Emma Barbera with an RBI-single and Mirenda scored on a Cyclones wild pitch to extend the Cavaliers lead to 4-0. After Mirenda scored in the fourth on a Tobelmann RBI-knock, the Cavs broke the game open in the fifth as Cabrini pushed across nine runs highlighted by a two-run double from Delaney followed by an RBI-single from Huling to take a 14-2 lead and ultimately seal the 14-4 win for the Cavs.
Delaney led Cabrini's offense in Game 2, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Mirenda, Tobelmann, and Huling each collected two hits.
With the sweep, the Cavaliers officially secured the No. 1 seed for the 2023 Atlantic East Conference postseason tournament set to begin on Friday, May 5.
