Byrnes tosses no-no in Cavaliers sweep of Neumann

ASTON, Pa. – Senior Avery Byrnes threw a no-hitter in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Neumann University Wednesday afternoon as the Cavaliers took the first game 4-1 followed by a 2-1 win in Game 2.

After squandering a one-out double in the top of the first, the Cavaliers put up three runs on three hits in the top of the third. Kaitlyn Delaney was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and later scored after back-to-back singles from Sydney Andrews and Kelsey Huling to put the Cavaliers up 1-0. Two batters later, a bunt from Shauna Stotler caused a miscue for the Neumann defense, plating two more runs for the Cavaliers.

In the seventh, Byrnes helped herself out with an RBI-single to score Madison Gugel, but she had all the run support she needed. The Downingtown native was masterful on the day as she allowed only three walks and punched out eight on her way to her fifth-career no-hitter.

In Game 2, Daphne Santos followed Byrnes with a gem of her own. The freshman went the distance for a complete game effort as she allowed just one run on three hits with three strikeouts.

Like in Game 1, the Cavs struck first in the top of the second as Andrews led off the inning with a single and later came around to score after two Neumann errors and a passed ball. Then in the third, the Knights plated a single run on an RBI-single to right to knot the game at one apiece. In the top of the fifth, a single and stolen base from Ariana Mirenda sparked a two-out rally for the Cavs. Then with Mirenda in scoring position, Abby Tobelmann promptly untied the game with a single to center, eventually proving to be the game-winning RBI.

The Cavaliers return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 11 as Cabrini heads to Immaculata to play the second game of a doubleheader originally on March 27. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
