HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Cabrini University baseball team split its doubleheader with Centenary University Friday afternoon as the Cavaliers dropped Game 1, 8-5, but took Game 2, 17-6, behind two home runs and five RBIs from
Dustin Sutton.
The Cavaliers got out to a hot start in the first game as Sutton led off the contest with a walk and later advanced to second on a passed ball before he came around to score on an RBI-single from
Jaden Dickerson. The Cavs held a 1-0 advantage until the bottom of the third when the Cyclones plated two runs on an RBI-single and a Cabrini miscue. The Cavaliers then answered back in top of the fourth with two runs as
Colton Narciso singled home
Sean Glatts followed by a sacrifice fly from Dickerson to go back ahead 3-2.
In the fifth, Cabrini extended its lead to 5-2 with a lead-off homer from
Christian Strickland and an RBI-single from
Shane Chavez-Zottnick, but that was the final Cavaliers lead in the ballgame as Centenary scored five unanswered runs in the bottom half.
In Game 2, the Cavaliers did not let their Game 1 fortunes affect play as the Cavs scored right away in the first inning. Sutton led off the game with a double down the right field line and later came round to score on a fielder's choice from Dickerson. Two batters later, Dickerson scored on an RBI-groundout from Strickland to give the Cavs a 2-0 lead. The Cyclones plated a run in the second, but the Cavs answered with a run in the third to go ahead 3-1.
Centenary knotted the game at three apiece in the fourth, but in the sixth, three Cabrini hits and three Cyclones miscues led to six runs for the Cavs. Then in the eighth, Sutton and Narciso, the team's home run leaders, led off the inning with back-to-back jacks; the Cavs then batted around as Sutton came back to the dish with the bases loaded and promptly unloaded them with a homer to right to put Cabrini ahead 17-4 and cap off the eight-run inning.
Sutton finished Game 2 3-for-6 with two homers and five RBIs while Narciso went 4-for-6 and Strickland went 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
Game 2 starter,
Jordan Silvestri went seven quality innings as the sophomore allowed four runs, only three earned, with no walks and three strikeouts.
The Cavaliers return to Cabrini Carroll Field on Tuesday, April 11 for the rubber match. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
