Cavaliers advance to AEC Championship

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Cabrini University baseball team advanced to the 2023 Atlantic East Conference championship as the Cavaliers went 2-1 in the conference's double-elimination tournament.

In their second game of the 2023 tournament, the Cavaliers squared off against Immaculata University at the Immaculata Baseball Stadium Friday afternoon. In the bottom of the first, Cabrini fell behind 6-0 as the Mighty Macs sent nine men to the plate and took advantage of six hits and two Cavs miscues. Cabrini responded with a lone run in the top of the second as Brady Campbell plated Ben Houghton with an RBI-single. In the third, the Macs tacked on two more runs to take an 8-1 lead through three and despite a lone run in the sixth from the Cavs, Immaculata cruised to a 9-2 win, forcing the Cavaliers to face No. three-seeded Neumann.

In the second game of the day, Cabrini took an early lead in the bottom of the second as back-to-back RBI knocks from Campbell and Ryan Dipper put the Cavs up 2-0 through two innings. Then in the fourth, Dipper doubled home Zack Brook to extend the lead to 3-0 and in the fifth, the Cavs plated four more as Jaden Dickerson, Houghton, and Brook all had RBI knocks. Dipper added a sacrifice fly, and the Cavs held a 7-0 lead after five innings.

In the eighth, Dipper led off the inning with a solo homer and Dustin Sutton later doubled for Cabrini's ninth run of the day and sealed their spot in the conference championship.

Starter Pat Toal went six innings and allowed just two runs on seven hits and punched out 8 to earn his sixth win of the year. Junior Dom Marotta came on in relief and tossed two perfect innings with three strikeouts to hold down the win.

Friday's win over Neumann was head coach Nick Weisheipl's 200th career win.

Cabrini is set to face Immaculata in the championship on Saturday, May 13. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
