Byrnes no-hits Husson, propels Cavaliers to regional semifinals

MEDFORD, Mass. – Senior Avery Byrnes no-hit Husson University Friday afternoon as the Cabrini University softball team topped the Eagles 4-0 to advance to the Medford Regional semifinal game.

The Cavaliers are set to face host Tufts University Friday, May 19 at 4 p.m. to see who goes onto face Moravian in the regional championship.

Byrnes came out firing on all cylinders Friday afternoon as the Downingtown native set the tone and struck out eight of the first nine batters she faced, with six via a swing and miss. Byrnes then helped herself out at the plate as she knocked in the game's first run with a bunt-single in the bottom of the first to give Cabrini a 1-0 lead. The next inning, Kelsey Huling plated Kaitlyn Delaney on a bunt single to take a 2-0 advantage.

Byrnes continued to cruise through the Husson order as she retired the first 10 Eagles hitters she faced until a one-out walk in the top of the fourth for her only base runner of the day. In the bottom of the sixth, Holly Smith provided some insurance for Byrnes as Smith roped a two-run double down the left field line to extend the Cabrini lead to 4-0. Byrnes then promptly ended the game the same way she started it as she punched out three in a row for 15 Ks on the day.

This was Byrnes's 10th career no-hitter and the program's first NCAA tournament win since the Cavaliers defeated Mary Baldwin University 8-0 in 2004.
