Radnor, PA - On Saturday morning, Cabrini Women's Soccer hosted the Vikings of Berry College (Georgia) in their eventual home opener.
In the opening half, Cabrini and Berry alternated looks, but the game remained scoreless.
Forty seconds into period number two, the Cavaliers struck first. Approaching a right side corner kick,
Amanda Elwell sent the ball to the far post, just inside the goal box. Elwell's corner was met by
Mia Dills, whose header found the back of the net, giving the Cavs the game's opening goal.
Cabrini looked to extend their lead, and nearly did so in the 61st minute. After gaining possession in their attacking half,
Rylie Butler led
Paige Bowman with a pass to the right side of the penalty box. Bowman's one touch try was a strong near side shot, but it was sent away by the Vikings goalkeeper.
Cabrini held onto their 1-0 lead through the 73rd minute, but would lose it after a corner kick scramble. Berry sent their corner just outside the goal box, where it was headed forward. The Viking stationed closest to the goal intercepted the ball with her chest, settling it beneath her and giving another Viking an open window to score.
Shortly thereafter, with the score tied 1-1, a foul in Cabrini's box set up a Berry penalty kick, which they converted. With three minutes left in the contest, a Cavalier handball led to another Viking penalty kick. Berry would find the netting on this attempt as well, removing any legitimate chance for a Cavs comeback.
Berry capitalized on Cabrini's late miscues, earning the Vikings the 3-1 victory.
After the game, coach
Ken Prothero was optimistic about the team's ability to bounce back, stating "We played well for about 80 minutes today. Unfortunately, the game is 90. Losing on a PK is never fun, but we will learn from this and continue to battle. Our team is a resilient group and will continue to grow every match."
Cabrini will play again on Wednesday 9/13, hosting Arcadia at 4:30pm.
