Gophers Outlast Cavaliers in Afternoon Affair

Radnor, PA - On Saturday afternoon, Cabrini Women's Soccer hosted the Gophers of Goucher College.

Goucher got on the board early, netting a goal in the 17th minute. The Gophers connected on a series of one-timers, ultimately finding a shot inside the penalty box that was struck into the right side of Cabrini's goal.

The Cavaliers responded quickly, getting a goal of their own eleven minutes later. As Grace Langefeld lofted a throw-in toward Goucher's goal, it was headed away, setting up a Cabrini corner kick from the left side. Amanda Elwell took the corner, and played the ball far post to Mia Dills. Dills headed the ball over the oncoming Gopher keeper and into the center of their goal, tying the score 1-1.

The score would remain even until the 73rd minute. It was then that the Cavaliers defense worked to take possession back from the right of their goal, but Goucher had just enough room to place a pass along the endline. The lateral pass found a Gopher forward, who lifted the ball into the upper right corner of the Cavaliers' net, giving Goucher a one goal lead.

Goucher curbed some late pressure from Cabrini, awarding the Gophers a 2-1 victory.

After the disappointing loss, coach Ken Prothero gave reasons for optimism. "I think we played really well for much of this game. Soccer can be a tough sport, a game of inches. They snuck one in late in the second half, and we had a lot of chances but didn't find the back of the net. We have a lot of young players getting minutes, and we're continuing to improve with each game."

Reflecting on the match, Paige Bowman agreed with Prothero's sentiment and spoke to the team's competitiveness. "As Ken said, we are getting better every game. We played as hard as we could, but today's game just didn't bounce our way."

Cabrini returns to action on Wednesday, 9/20. The Cavs will travel to face Widener University at 7pm.
