Women’s Soccer Earns Wednesday Night Win

Cabrini holds onto 1-0 lead to defeat Eastern for season’s first victory

Radnor, PA - In the last Eagle Road standoff, Cabrini played host to Eastern University at Edith Robb Dixon Field on Wednesday night. The match, initially scheduled for 4:30pm at Eastern, swapped venues and adjusted its start time due to the wave of excessive heat temperatures.

While Cabrini and Eastern each held their own defensively, both had scoring opportunities presented to them.
In a box score that largely mirrors itself, both teams took 9 shots and both goalkeepers made 4 saves.

An early opportunity for the Cavaliers was created by Gabby Palladino, who intercepted a pass after an Eagle throw in. Palladino would carry the ball herself from beyond the midfield line to the right of the opponent's penalty box. Her eventual shot was secured by Eastern's keeper, as would her second shot on goal. The latter came in the 58th minute, where she was the recipient of a nice hit-ahead pass that Daleyney Herrera-Mingucha chipped over several Eagle defenders.

Breaking an hour-long deadlock, the Cavaliers scored off a left side Cabrini corner kick. Amanda Elwell placed the cross between the penalty marker and goal area, which Rebekah Cunningham sent toward Eastern's goal. Just before Cunningham's header could reach the Eagle's goalkeeper, Rylie Butler extended her left foot toward the oncoming ball, redirecting it perfectly into the lower right corner of Eastern's net. Elwell and Cunningham were both credited with assisting Butler on the Cavaliers first goal of the season.

Eager to match with a goal of their own, Eastern put a lot of pressure on Cabrini's defense late in the contest. The Eagles were unsuccessful in their quest for an equalizer, thanks in large part to Caroline Hassall, who recorded two saves in the last ten minutes.

The Cavaliers would celebrate as time expired, marking their second clean sheet in as many games.

Cabrini is set to host Berry College on Saturday 9/9. Saturday's 11am contest will be the only time the two programs will face one another.
