In nine seasons at the helm of the Cabrini men’s lacrosse program, head coach Steve Colfer has mentored the Cavaliers to nine Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) titles and eight straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He owns a commanding 123-33 career record, ranking second nationally among active Division III coaches in career winning percentage (.788).
Colfer was named the CSAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in nine seasons in 2009. Attackman Casey Grugan earned USILA Second Team All-America distinction, while Joe Monroe, Jeff Moore and Scott Reimer each received honorable mention distinction. Reimer was also named the program's first USILA Scholar All-American.
Cabrini claimed the NCAA statistical championship in scoring margin last season, out-scoring its opponents by an average of 9.68 goals per game.
In 2008, Colfer coached the Cavaliers to a program-best 17 wins. Under his tutelage, four student-athletes – third-team honoree Grugan and honorable mention selections Matt McKinney, Moore and Reimer – claimed USILA All-America distinction. Additionally, nine Cavaliers earned all-conference accolades including Grugan’s player of the year nod and Coleman Till’s rookie of the year honor. The Cavaliers finished the season ranked No. 6 nationally, the program’s highest listing all-time.
On April 9, 2008, Colfer added yet another bullet point to a laundry list of coaching accomplishments. Cabrini’s resounding 17-4 win against CSAC foe Centenary College marked his 100th career win with the Blue & White. With Colfer at the helm, the Cavaliers have won a nation's-best 71 straight conference games during the regular season. Including the postseason, that streak has currently reached 88 games.
Colfer served as co-head coach of the Division III team for the 65th annual North-South All-Star in 2006, hosted by Villanova. Also, he helped guide the Bermuda National Team in Ontario at the 2006 World Games, the team’s debut on the international stage.
With Colfer leading the charges, the Cavaliers have become a welcomed fixture in the NCAA Tournament, capturing its first win all-time in 2003. Cabrini bested local-rival Widener, 13-8. The Cavaliers have hosted three NCAA Tournament contests at Edith Robb Dixon Field, welcoming Ithaca in 2007, Haverford College in 2008 and Montclair State University in 2009.
Before his appointment as head coach, Colfer served four years as assistant with the Cavaliers, serving as the team’s offensive coordinator from 1997-2000. He began his coaching career on the sidelines at the high school level at Salesianum School in Wilmington, Del., helping lead his alma mater to a state title game appearance in 2004 and the ultimate goal one year following.
Colfer graduated from Salesianum in 1989, performing as an all-state midfielder as a senior and playing a key role in the team’s run to the state title game against Tatnall. He earned three varsity letters at the University of Scranton as a longstick midfielder.
Colfer graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Scranton in 1993. He earned a master's of science degree in education from West Chester University in 1999.
