RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men's basketball team captured its second win in two games to open the 2008-09 season with a convincing 81-64 victory against Landmark Conference opponent the University of Scranton Wednesday at Nerney Field House. Junior forward Kevin Misevicius powered the Cavaliers' offense, totaling a game-high 25 points.
The win is Cabrini's second against the Royals since the series debuted in 1986 and the first against eighth-year Scranton head coach Carl Danzig. The Cavaliers' triumph avenges losses of 17, 29 and 19 points the last three seasons versus Scranton.
Misevicius shot a marksmen-like 11-for-16 from the field, including a 2-for-5 clip from long range.
In addition to Misevicius, the Cabrini offense boasted three scorers in double figures. Junior guard Corey White logged 21 minutes off the bench, tallying 19 points on 5-for-7 shooting overall. He also posted a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line, including four straight after a double technical foul was assessed to Scranton's Paul Hawk with 2:21 remaining.
Sophomore guard Lamar Fisher collected 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Sophomore forward Dom Farrello and sophomore guard Glenn Washington chipped in with nine points each. Point guard Charles Bush led the Cavaliers on the glass, grabbing six rebounds and adding six points and five assists.
The Royals placed three scorers in double figures led by Paul Biagioli's 16 points. Reserve Eli Londo notched 11 points and Ryan FitzPatrick tallied 10 points.
Scranton, who received Top 25 votes in D3Hoops.com's preseason poll, raced to a 16-7 advantage early following a three-ball from Biagioli. After Cabrini trimmed the lead to six points, 20-14, the Royals answered and pushed its cushion back to nine, 23-14, with 8:40 remaining in the first half.
The Cavaliers seized control with less than five minutes left before intermission, using a 14-2 run, keyed by a traditional three-point play from Misevicius, to grab a 36-30 lead. It was an advantage Cabrini would never relinquish.
The Cavaliers' cushion grew to 11 points, 47-36, just three minutes into the second frame following another Misevicius lay-in. Scranton answered, cutting into the Cabrini lead and trailing by just five, 51-46, with 13 minutes remaining.
A trifecta from Misevicius with 8:27 on the clock capped a 10-2 Cavaliers' spurt and handed the hosts a 61-48 edge. The Cabrini lead stretch to a game-high 22 points, 81-59, with just under 2:30 left.
The Blue & Gray forced the Royals into 19 turnovers and boasted its own 14 assist-versus-11 turnovers performance. After shooting just 6-for-16 from long range in the first half, the Cavaliers settled and drained 3-of-5 tries in the closing frame.
Cabrini (2-0) remains at home, playing its third of six straight at Nerney Field House to open the season, Tuesday, November 25 against Penn State – Berks at 7 p.m.
