RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men's basketball team claimed its fourth straight victory, and third in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play, with a 72-61 win Saturday against Baptist Bible College at Nerney Field House. Sophomore shooting guard Glenn Washington led the Cavaliers' offense with 21 points.
Washington shot 8-for-16 from the floor overall, but four of his 21 points came at the game's most critical juncture. With the Cavaliers ahead just five points, 66-61, with 1:34 remaining, Washington calmly drained two free throws. Seventy-two seconds following, he knocked down two more free throws that led to the game's final tally.
Junior forward Kevin Misevicius totaled 14 points on 7-for-14 shooting and recorded six rebounds and four steals. Junior forward Chris Blake also added 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Blake shot 5-for-7 from the floor, including two back-breaking three-point baskets late in the second half.
Twice in the final 10 minutes the Defenders chopped the Cavaliers' advantage to four points before Blake toed the three-point arc and splashed just his third and fourth trifectas of the season, pushing the Cavaliers ahead seven points and deflating a late BBC rally.
Senior point guard Charles Bush totaled six points, six assists and three rebounds. Sophomore combo guard Lamar Fisher notched seven points, pulled down seven boards and swiped five steals. Sophomore forward Dom Farrello returned to the starting lineup and posted eight points and five caroms.
Cabrini found itself in its largest first half deficit of the season, trailing 16-4 in the early-goings. Shooting guard Justin Cook buried three three-point field goals in the opening minutes, driving the hosts into a 12-point hole at the 12:21 mark.
The Blue & Gray answered with a 17-3 run to claim its first lead of the game, 21-19, after a lay-in from Farrello with 6:26 before the break. However, the Defenders responded and closed out the half on an 11-6 run to lead 30-27 at the intermission.
BBC led by as much as five points, 36-31, in the first three minutes of the second half following Cook's sixth three-pointer of the game. Cook finished with a game-high 31 points, shooting 9-for-17 from long range and 11-for-22 overall.
Misevicius ignited an 8-3 run with a jump-shot that brought the Cavaliers back even, 39-39 at the 14:53 mark. The lead changed hands three more times before a second jump-shot from Misevicius supplied Cabrini with an edge, 45-44, it would never relinquish.
The Blue & Gray twice pushed its lead to seven points following the aforementioned three-point baskets from Blake. A triple from Washington at the 5:10 mark ballooned the Cavaliers' cushion to 10 points, 62-52.
Baptist Bible cut the lead to five points, 64-59, with two free throws from forward Nathan Greve. However, Cook committed his fifth personal foul on the next possession, costing the Defenders their most lethal outside threat.
The Blue & Gray outscored BBC 18-4 in the paint and owned a 13-0 advantage in bench points.
Greve and guard Tom Waszaj each added 14 points to the Defenders' cause. Point guard Khristian Collins dished seven assists.
Cabrini (9-2, 3-0) continues its CSAC slate Thursday, January 15 at Marywood University as part of a men and women's double-header. The women's game is slated to start at 6 p.m., while the men will tip at approximately 8 p.m.
