RADNOR, Pa. – Playing through the low temperature and steady rain effects of the Nor'easter that is slamming the Northeast Region of the country, the Cabrini men's soccer team pulled out a 2-1 win against unbeaten Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent Neumann University Saturday at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
Senior midfielder Brian Raffle supplied the game's eventual decisive tally in the 81st minute, handing the Knights their first loss against a conference foe in six matches.
Senior back Jason Moran put the Cavaliers on the scoreboard first in the 26th minute, scoring his second goal of the season and second in three games with a header off a corner from junior back Troy Allen. Allen's serve to the far post was redirected to the front of the net by senior midfielder Brian Moran before Jason Moran buried the goal.
Neumann evened the contest in the 61st minute with junior back Zach Sell's sixth goal of the season. Off the Knights' second corner of the second half, Sell gathered a loose ball in front before beating Cabrini goalkeeper Bryan Johnson.
Raffle's team-best eighth goal of the season provided the Blue & White a lead it would never relinquish. Through 14 matches, he leads the Cavaliers with 17 points this season and is tied for team's top spot with three game-winning goals.
Johnson totaled two saves for his 11th win of the season and 33rd of his Cabrini career. Ratliff posted seven stops in the loss for Neumann.
The wet and sloppy playing conditions made for a physical contest up-and-down the field. The contest consisted of 17 total fouls and seven yellow card cautions.
The win moves the Cavaliers into a tie with the Knights for the top spot in the CSAC. Neumann joins Cabrini, Gwynedd-Mercy College and Marywood University as one of four teams with one loss in conference play. Gwynedd-Mercy's match today at Centenary has been postponed. Marywood is in progress against Philadelphia Biblical University.
Cabrini (11-3-1, 4-1-0) plays at Marywood Wednesday, October 21 at 7 p.m.
