RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men's basketball team captured its fourth straight victory Saturday, dropping Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) rival Gwynedd-Mercy College 95-87 at Nerney Field House. The Cavaliers avenge a 90-55 loss at the hands of the Griffins just 12 days ago.
The win also improves Cabrini's conference record to 9-3, pushing the Blue & Gray to a half-game advantage over Gwynedd-Mercy (8-3) in the CSAC standings with four games to play. The Cavaliers' 15 overall victories are the program's most since the 2003-04 season.
The Cavaliers' offense featured three scorers with at least 20 points, including a team-high 30-point performance from junior forward Kevin Misevicius. Misevicius shot 10-for-20 from the field and knocked down all nine of his free throw attempts. He also swiped six steals and dished four assists.
Sophomore forward Dom Farrello tallied 24 points, grabbed eight boards and recorded three steals. Farrello shot 6-of-8 from the foul line.
Sophomore shooting guard Glenn Washington returned to the Blue & Gray line-up following a four-game hiatus. Washington posted his second double-double of the season, totaling 20 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 6-for-9 overall and 4-for-6 from long range.
Junior forward Chris Blake scored 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting, including three critical three-point field goals in the opening minutes of the first half.
The Cavaliers owned a 47-42 advantage at halftime, improving their record to 13-0 this season when leading at the intermission. Cabrini shot 51.4 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes and received 12 points each from Farrello and Misevicius.
The Griffins pieced together a 13-0 run early in the second period, grabbing a 65-58 cushion with 13:40 remaining. However, Cabrini responded with an 11-3 run of its own to re-establish a 69-68 edge with just under 11 minutes on the clock.
Trailing by one, 74-73, Farrello mid-range jump-shot at the 6:06 mark supplied the Cavaliers with a lead they would never relinquish.
Holding onto an 86-83 lead with less than two minutes remaining, sophomore guard Lamar Fisher's leaning jump-shot missed the target. But Fisher's second effort on the rebound created an open lay-up opportunity for Washington and five-point cushion, 88-83.
The Cavaliers shot a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line in the final four minutes.
The Cabrini defense continues to wreak havoc on opposing offenses. Gwynedd-Mercy was forced into 20 turnovers, resulting in 30 points in the Blue & Gray's favor. The Cavaliers had been inducing their opponents to an average of 22-plus turnovers over the last three games entering Saturday's contest.
Senior forward Dave Smith paced the Griffins, recording a double-double with 31 points, on 15-for-17 shooting, and 13 rebounds. Sophomore forward Jon Hogga tallied 18 points and nine boards.
Cabrini (15-5, 9-3) breaks from its CSAC schedule one last time, hosting backyard-rival Eastern University at Nerney Field House Monday, February 9. Game time is set for approximately 8 p.m., following the Cavalier women's contest against the College of Notre Dame.
