IMMACULATA, Pa. - The Cabrini softball team continued Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play Friday, splitting a double-header at Immaculata University. The Cavaliers posted a 6-5 victory in game one. The Mighty Macs earned a 7-1 win in the nightcap.
Junior pitcher Cheri Johns tossed 7.0 innings en route to the game one victory for the Cavaliers. John struck out five batters and allowed 12 hits.
Freshman 2B Ryan McDonough went 3-for-4 at the plate, knocking in two runs and scoring one. Senior 1B Kelsie LaBauve and freshman SS Sammy Thompson each went 2-for-4.
Cabrini jumped on the Mighty Macs, grabbing a 5-1 advantage after four innings of game one. The Cavaliers plated three run in the top half of the third, sparked by a lead-off triple from McDonough.
Immaculata trimmed its deficit to just one run, 6-5, with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Johns retired the Mighty Macs in order in the sixth before running into a jam in the seventh. After a lead-off infield single from freshman OF Julia Lampugh, Immaculata moved the tying run to within 60 feet with just one out.
Cabrini squelched any thoughts of a comeback as Thompson ended the game on a 6-3 doubleplay off the bat of sophomore 1B Sara Holleran.
Senior pitcher Val Rutt-Guerriere lasted all seven for IU in the first game, striking out five Cabrini batters and surrendering 11 hits.
Immaculata jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game two after just three innings. Junior SS Jackie Finkbohner launched a two-run home run in the second inning.
Senior 3B Kristie Sandefur led the Cavaliers' offense, going 2-for-4 at the dish and driving in one run. Thompson scored Cabrini's lone tally.
Immaculata hurler Missy Fetter pitched 7.0 innings, striking out four and allowing seven hits.
Cabrini (4-8, 2-2) returns to action Monday, March 23 at home against CSAC opponent Centenary College. The first pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m.
