ALLENTOWN, Pa. –
The Cabrini softball team ended a six-game losing skid Wednesday with a two-game sweep of Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Cedar Crest College. The Cavaliers opened the afternoon with a thrilling 5-4 extra innings victory in game one.

With one out in the top half of the ninth inning, Cabrini held runners on second and third base. Freshman Ryan McDonough reached safely on a Falcons' error, scoring sophomore Susan Schmidt for the go-ahead and eventual winning run.

The Cavaliers maintained a 4-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh frame before Cedar Crest plated three with a three-run homerun, sending the contest into extra innings.

Junior P Liz Zimmer claimed her sixth win of the season, lasting all nine innings and notching 11 strikeouts. Zimmer allowed eight hits and just two earned runs.

Cabrini trailed 1-0 until a three-run fifth inning handed the visitors a 3-1 advantage. Sophomore Chrissy Squillace triggered the rally with a game-tying double, scoring pinch-runner Leslie Farrell from first base.

Following a bunt single from freshman Sammy Thompson that scored Squillace from third, senior Kristie Sandefur slammed an RBI double. Sandefur added a run-scoring triple in the top of the seventh.

The Blue & White hung three runs on the board in the first inning of game two en route to a 10-5 victory.

However, the Falcons answered with five runs over the first three innings, grabbing a 5-3 cushion heading into the fourth.

The Cavaliers regained a lead it would never relinquish with five runs in the fifth inning, sparked by a two-run double from junior Cheri Johns.

Johns returned to the rubber from injury for the Cavaliers in game two, pitching six innings and striking out seven. Johns, who totaled four RBI in game two, suffered a broken nose prior to Cabrini's double-header against Neumann College April 18.

Senior Melissa Benedetti drove in three runs in the nightcap, knocking in runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

The two victories Wednesday improves Cabrini's overall mark to 12-18 in 2009, matching the program's win total from one year ago. The Cavaliers are 10-8 in CSAC play, standing in sixth place with four games remaining.

Cabrini (12-18, 10-8) returns to the play Friday, April 24 at home against the College of Notre Dame. Game one is scheduled for a 4 p.m.
