RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team wrapped up the 2009 regular season with a two-game sweep at Cabrini Field against Keystone College Saturday. With the win, the Cavaliers earn two crucial victories in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) standings and provide themselves breathing room from the trailing Giants.
Junior P Liz Zimmer pitched seven brilliant innings, allowing seven hits for her eighth win of the season on the rubber.
Senior 3B Kristie Sandefur notched two RBI in game, hitting a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning that provided the Cavaliers with a 2-1 edge.
Keystone answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI double from Megan Thomas.
Junior pinch-hitter Cheri Johns provided the game's heroics in the Cavaliers' last at-bat with an RBI single.
With one out in the seventh, freshman DP Angela Shookster started the offense with a base-hit. Pinch-runner Mary Kate Smith plated the game's winning run after advancing to third on consecutive singles from senior Melissa Benedetti and senior Kelsie LaBauve.
In game two, the Blue & White clawed back from a four-run deficit in the final three innings for the victory. Trailing 7-3 after four-and-a-half innings, a Cavaliers' rally resulted in a dramatic 8-7 win.
LaBauve provided the game-winning, a single into the outfield that scored junior P Cheri Johns from second base. Cabrini tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with three runs, sparked by a two-run double from sophomore Chrissy Squillace.
Johns tossed all seven in game two, notching three strikeouts and allowing only three hits. Johns matched Zimmer's team-high with eight wins.
Following game two, head coach Lisa McGregor and the Cabrini softball team honored its three seniors – Benedetti, LaBauve and Sandefur.
Cabrini (16-18, 14-8) will learn of its postseason fate at the conclusion of the CSAC regular season Sunday, April 26.
