RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team snapped a brief two-game skid with a resounding two-game sweep of Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent Rosemont, 13-0 and 14-0, Wednesday at Cabrini Field. Junior hurlers Cheri Johns and Liz Zimmer each earned their fifth wins of the season.
Johns tallied a season-high nine strikeouts and allowed only one hit, a single to centerfield in the first inning. After leaving the bases loaded in the first and issuing a lead-off walk in the second, she went without allowing a base-runner for the final three frames.
Zimmer notched 11 strikeouts and also surrendered just one hit. With out in the fourth inning, Rosemont leftfielder Adriann Demchenko broke up Zimmer's bid for a second no-hitter this season with an infield single. The base-hit ricocheted off Zimmer's shin, but the junior re-grouped to get out of the fourth and strike out the side in the fifth.
Johns received her support in the form of back-to-back five-run innings in the second and third stanzas of game one. Four different Cavaliers recorded an RBI in the second inning, including senior Melissa Benedetti's who slammed a run-scoring triple off the right field fence.
Freshman Ryan McDonough drove in two more runs in the third with a double to left field. Senior Kristie Sandefur followed one batter later with a triple that turned into a run scored as a result of a Rosemont error at the plate. The Ramblers committed seven errors in game one.
The Cavaliers raced to a 12-0 advantage after three innings in the nightcap. Senior Kelsie LaBauve and Johns each launched two-run home runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively. LaBauve and Sandefur each notched three RBI in game two.
Cabrini (10-12, 8-6) returns to action Thursday, April 9 at home against Centennial Conference foe Ursinus College. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
