RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men's soccer team hoisted its second straight Cabrini Soccer Festival title Saturday at Edith Robb Dixon Field after a 3-0 shutout victory against Alvernia University. Senior goalkeeper Bryan Johnson recorded six saves for his first solo shutout of the season.
The Cavaliers used three first-half goals en route to their second victory in as many days. Cabrini opened the 2009 festival with a convincing 5-0 win against NYU – Poly Friday afternoon.
Senior midfielder Brian Raffle jump-started the Cavaliers in the opening period, handing the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute with a strike from 25-yards out that tucked itself inside the opposite post.
Junior forward King Saah notched his first goal of the season less than four minutes following to supply the Blue & White with a two-goal cushion. Sophomore forward Eric Collins' charge down the left side and cross in front of the net set-up Saah's tally.
Cabrini's lead ballooned to three goals, 3-0, after senior midfielder Evan Hanauer's header, off a feed from sophomore back Kyle Johnson, beat Alvernia goalkeeper Ryan Gilbert in the 32nd minute.
From that point forward, the Cavaliers' defense locked down to keep the Crusaders off the scoreboard. Johnson made consecutive saves from his stomach on Alvernia's best scoring chance in the first half. Minutes later, he twice rose above the crowd on the crease to punch two Crusaders' shots to the sidelines.
Alvernia's best opportunity in the second half came mid-way through when forward David Morganheiser's left-foot shot from the top of the box was pushed over the crossbar by a lunging Johnson.
Gilbert notched four saves in the loss for the Crusaders.
Cabrini (2-1-0) begins the road portion of its 2009 season Wednesday, September 9 at Rutgers University – Camden. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
