RADNOR, Pa. – The No. 3 seed Cabrini men's soccer team scored two second half goals separated by less than six minutes en route to a come-from-behind 2-1 win against No. 6 seed Gwynedd-Mercy College in the quarterfinal round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament on Tuesday night at Edith Robb Dixon Field. Junior forward Eric Collins scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Cavaliers in the victory.
Collins' team-leading 12th goal of the season put Cabrini ahead for good in the 73rd minute. Streaking into the box, Collins fed freshman midfielder C.J. Doherty before taking a return pass and striking the decisive tally into the upper right-hand corner of the twine.
The score is Collins' seventh game-winning goal of the season. He has netted each of his 12 goals this season over the last 12 matches for the Cavaliers.
Cabrini trailed for more than 66 minutes until sophomore midfielder Ryan Juhring deposited the match's equalizer at the 66:47 mark. Junior back Kyle Johnson lofted a long re-start kick into the box that Juhring redirected past Gwynedd-Mercy sophomore netminder John Furphy.
The Cavaliers owned a distinct offensive advantage, out-shooting the Griffins for the match overall, 18-6, including 11 attempts in the second half.
Gwynedd-Mercy led for a majority of the contest after freshman midfielder Christian Pembroke tallied the match's first goal in the 9th minute. A shot from senior midfielder Ryan Murray deflected off the post and found Pembroke all alone with Cabrini freshman goalkeeper Eric Nowicki left stranded.
However, Nowicki shook off the early score and earned his eighth win of the season for the Blue & White with three saves. Furphy posted 10 stops in the loss for the Griffins.
The victory also extends the Cavaliers' CSAC Tournament win streak to five matches, dating back to the 2008 campaign. The Blue & White is the conference's two-time defending champion, also bouncing Gwynedd-Mercy from the postseason en route to the crown last season.
Cabrini (9-9-1) hits the road for No. 2 seed Marywood University and a semifinal round match on Thursday, Nov. 4. Match time against the Pacers is to be determined.
