The Cabrini men's basketball team had its two-game win streak snapped on Wednesday night following a 77-64 loss at Landmark Conference opponent the University of Scranton. Sophomore guard Cory Lemons led the Cavaliers with a team-high 14 points in the loss.
Lemons shot 7-for-15 from the floor and grabbed two rebounds. Senior forward Dom Farrello and sophomore guard A.J. Williams also reached double figures, each scoring 12 points.
Junior guard John Boyd chipped in nine points.
Farrello and freshman forward Fran Rafferty led the Cabrini effort on the glass, each collecting seven rebounds. Sophomore center Goran Dulac totaled five boards. Farrello also swiped four steals.
The Cavaliers led by as much as nine points in the opening half, 21-12, behind a solid bench effort. A 3-point field goal from sophomore guard John Glenn and a fast-break lay-in from Williams created the nine-point cushion at the 10:00 mark.
The Cabrini reserves scored 11 and the Cavaliers benefitted from 20 points in the paint in the first half.
Lemons and Williams ignited the Cavaliers in the opening period, each scoring eight points. Boyd and Dulac each contributed five points.
The Royals answered with a 10-2 run over the next four-plus minutes and trimmed the Blue & White lead to one point, 23-22, with 5:56 left before the break. Cabrini held onto a one-point edge at halftime, 33-32.
The Cavaliers pushed their lead to four points, 37-33, in the opening minutes of the second half. However, Scranton grabbed its first lead of the contest, 39-37, at the 17:06 mark. The Royals led 54-48 with 9:25 remaining.
Scranton out-scored the Blue & White 23-12 over the next eight minutes en route to a game-high 17-point cushion, 77-60, with 1:04 on the clock.
Senior guard Luke Hawk led all Royals scorers with 25 points and sophomore guard Travis Farrell tallied 20. The Cavaliers limited Scranton's leading scorer senior guard Zach Ashworth to just two points in the second half. However, Ashworth finished 18 on 4-for-13 shooting overall.
The win is the Royals' eighth all-time in 10 tries against the Blue & White in a series that dates back to 1986. Cabrini last knocked off Scranton, 81-64, on Nov. 24, 2008.
Cabrini (4-2) breaks for the holidays before returning to action on the road at York (PA) College on Wednesday, Dec. 29. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
