ASTON, Pa. – The Cabrini men's basketball team has completed the 2009-10 regular season with a 23-2 overall record and 17-1 mark in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) following an 89-87 win at Neumann University Saturday. The Cavaliers have reached the 23-win plateau for the first time since the 1995-96 season.
Senior forward Kevin Misevicius recorded his second double-double of the season with 31 points and 13 rebounds in the win. He knocked down five 3-point field goals. Cabrini is 6-1 over the last two seasons when Misevicius scores 30-or-more points.
Sophomore forward Dan Robinson reached double figures for the third straight game, netting 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting overall. Robinson added six rebounds.
Freshman point guard Cory Lemons also scored 14 points and claimed seven rebounds. Freshman combo guard A.J. Williams totaled 13 points, shooting 5-for-9 overall and 2-for-2 from long range.
The Cavaliers seemed to have the engine in cruise control and heading towards their seventh straight victory, leading the Knights by seven points, 75-68, with 60 seconds remaining in regulation.
However, a triple from Mike Walukiewicz, a lay-in from Na'Sheed Linton and another trifecta from Marquise Boggs pulled Neumann even, 76-76, with nine seconds left. Williams got a shot off on the Cavaliers' final possession, but his leaner was blocked by Sean Armstrong, sending Cabrini to its first overtime game of the season.
The Knights converted two free throws on its first possession of the extra frame before Misevicius connected from deep, providing the Cavaliers a one-point edge, 79-78. In fact, Misevicius scored the Blue & White's first nine points in the overtime, including six from the foul line. Cabrini led 88-84 with 32 seconds remaining.
Walukiewicz drained another 3-point field goal and pulled Neumann within one point, 88-87, with 14 seconds remaining. After Lemons extended the Cavaliers' advantage to 89-87 with 1-of-2 from the charity stripe, Linton went to the foul line with two seconds on the clock and a chance to tie, but came up empty on both attempts.
Cabrini is 3-0 in overtime games during the last two seasons under second-year head coach Marcus Kahn. Kahn has led the Blue & White to 45 overall victories in just 55 games at the helm of the program.
The Cavaliers raced out of the gates and off the tip, jumping to a 13-3 lead less than four minutes into the game. Yet, the Knights shot better than 56 percent in the opening 20 minutes and led 46-42 at the intermission. It marked just the fourth time this season that Cabrini trailed at halftime.
Linton led four scorers in double figures for Neumann with 30 points. Boggs poured in 18 points and Walukiewicz added 13. Ty Robinson also reached double digits with 10 points.
The Cavaliers last won 23 games in a single season during the 1995-96 campaign, when the team finished 24-3 overall, captured its fourth of six consecutive CSAC – formerly the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) – titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Cabrini (23-2, 17-1) is the No. 1 seed in this year's CSAC Tournament and owns the rights to home-court advantage throughout. The Cavaliers will host a semifinal round game at Nerney Field House Wednesday, Feb. 24. Opponent and game time is to be determined.
